Ten of the best this half-term

As a busy parent myself, I know that keeping the kids happy during half-term can be a challenge.

So, here are ten of my personal favourite family friendly activities for the late May half-term, 24 May – 1 June.

Download my leaflet or read on. Half Term Leaflet

  • Check out the Farnborough Air Sciences Museum – or FAST museum – on any Saturday, Sunday or Bank holiday. It includes a fascinating collection of aircraft, equipment, photographs, films and books related to our illustrious aviation history and an amazing flight simulator.
  • Southwood Woodland is great for a family walking or cycling. The woodland is important for nature conservation too, with a mixture of wildlife habitats – so keep your eyes out!
  • Aldershot Lido has reopened for half-term. This a real treat for all, weather permitting.
  • The sensory garden crafts and movement workshop at the West End Centre, Aldershot sounds like a lot of fun. There are two sessions on Tuesday so be sure to book in advance.
  • The Ministry of Science at Princes Hall. Expect a few loud bangs as this two hour show on Wednesday afternoon dives deep into the world of science.
  • Anyone for tennis? The Council has recently renovated the tennis courts at Manor Park, Cove Green and Rectory Road. Book a court and unleash your inner Emma Raducanu!
  • Indoor Go Karting at Team Sport. An exciting chance to race on Farnborough’s multi-level track. Children must be 8 years old or over and have a 25 inch inside leg measurement.
  • This is surely the area’s best kept secret. Every Saturday there’s a tour of the stunning Benedictine St Michael’s Abbey Church and the Imperial Crypt, the resting place of the last Bonaparte Emperor.
  • The Aldershot Military Museum (Thurs-Sun) tells the story of daily life for both soldier and civilian living in the towns of Aldershot, Farnborough and Cove. There’s an assault course and lots of hands-on activities.
  • Take the Yateley Common Nature Trail. Download the Nature Trail leaflet and set off on a 1.25mile self-guided nature walk through heathlands, woodlands and ponds. Arm your children with wax crayons to discover images of local birds, plants, animals and insects along the way.

Please be sure to check the websites for opening times, prices and booking arrangements.

Kids eat free

I know that it’s so hard to keep the kids entertained for long periods of time without spending a fortune. So, it’s great to know that there’s a list  are all the restaurants and cafes which are offering ‘Kids Eat Free’ (or for £1) during every UK school holiday in 2025 at Money Saving Central.

All details correct at the date of publication. Our thanks go to all the great people of Aldershot and Farnborough who make these events and activities possible.

I have spoken with the police following deeply concerning reports of a racist attack on members of our Nepalese community in Municipal Gardens on Tuesday. Hampshire Police have agreed to increase patrols in the area, and I will continue raising residents concerns with them and the relevant local authorities.

Let me be clear: violence, intimidation and racism have absolutely no place in Aldershot. These reports are appalling, and I know many residents will be feeling shaken and afraid. Aldershot and our Gurkhas have a proud history of standing against Nazi tyranny, and it is disgusting and frightening to hear reports of that same hateful ideology being used to target members of our Nepalese community today.

Our Nepalese and Gurkha community are at the heart of our town. Their service, sacrifice and contribution are part of Aldershot’s story. They are our neighbours, colleagues, friends and families. Our town is stronger because they are part of it, and I will always stand with them.

No one should feel unsafe in their own neighbourhood because of who they are, where they come from, or the colour of their skin.

Things like this do not happen in isolation. The language being used online to target and divide communities, including by some elected representatives, causes real harm. Those who stir up racism and hatred do not speak for Aldershot, and I will always stand against them and defend our values of respect, fairness and kindness.

I will keep working with the police, local authorities, community leaders and residents to ensure people feel heard, protected and safe, and that those responsible are brought to account.
